GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- - If you got a new snowmobile, boat, or off highway vehicle after the new year, the state of Colorado is requiring you to take a new step during registration.

The state is requiring proof of ownership when registering a snowmobile, boat, or OHV when they are purchased after January 1st, 2017.  The proof of ownership change was driven by an alarming concern.

“The thing is we want to make sure that the vehicle isn’t stolen or there isn't anything illegal going on with that,” said Mike Porras of Colorado Parks and Wildlife Northwest Region.
The proper proof of ownership for registering your vehicle include:
  • A bill of sale
  • A previous registration certificate
  • Manufacturers certificate of origin
  • Certificate of title
  • Any court issued document proving ownership
Failure to show proof of ownership will prevent the completion of the registration.   CPW does advise people could run into an issue when buying from a private seller.  “If there is no proof of ownership they’ll have to take it to our parks and rec’s offices or an officer will inspect the vehicle to make sure the VIN hasn’t been altered in any way,” said Porras.
CPW offers a bill of sale template on their website for anyone working with a private seller.  For additional details visit CPW’s website,
